My family did not own a TV when I was growing up, and that’s one thing about my childhood that I’ve never regretted.  In the early 1980s, I got hooked on old-time radio shows; you know the ones, from the 1930s through the 1950s.  Then I got hooked on Mystery Theater, which was a revival of audio drama in the 1970s and 1980s.

Outside of books, audio drama is my favorite form of entertainment.  It’s important to note that audio drama is not the same as audio books; the former has sound effects, music, and different actors voice different characters.  The latter is simply someone reading a book out loud.  Audio Drama is not as popular as it was during the World War II years — at least, not in the USA — but people are still making them.  One company, Graphic Audio, calls them “a movie in your mind”.

So I’ve said all of that to say this: The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has done an incredible job on four Lovecraft stories: At the Mountains of Madness, The Dunwich Horror, The Shadow Out of Time, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth.  (Of the four, my personal favorite is SOOT, followed closely by ATMOM.)  If you’re a Lovecraft fan, you owe it to yourself to buy these… and by the way, you can purchase them on CD, or, even cheaper, you can download them in mp3 format and be listening to them right away!  Check out their audios at this link.
