It’s bright. The future is bright. But I do have to make a change.
The Lovecraft eZine is a free online magazine featuring Lovecraftian horror… and I think it’s a damn good one. So do a lot of other people, and I’m grateful for that.
But it’s more than just a magazine. It’s also a blog where I share Lovecraftian news, and tips on Lovecraftian movies, books, games, and more.
It’s also a community, and I think that’s one of its greatest strengths. Not only do we chat on the eZine message board and the Facebook page, but we’re also doing something never done before: We are using the internet to talk face to face about all things Lovecraft. I’m proud of the weekend video chats, because most of us don’t have other Lovecraftians we can talk to where we live, and the video chats are the next best thing to being in the same room.
And, The Lovecraft eZine is turning into more than just a magazine — I’m going to be publishing some Lovecraftian books that you’re really going to be excited about. Here’s what’s coming: A book of Lovecraftian essays by today’s Mythos writers, for Kindle; a PRINT book of selected stories from the first three years of Lovecraft eZine; and a PRINT book of original stories titled Autumn Cthulhu, Lovecraftian tales with an autumn and/or Halloween setting. (Not to mention a non-Lovecraftian book I’m working on that you might be interested in.)
When I began this project at the beginning of 2011, it was a monthly magazine only. Since then, it has turned into so much more. I think those additional things, the things I’ve mentioned above, are worthwhile. But it’s difficult for me to continue to publish the eZine on a monthly basis with these additions.
So with all of that in mind, I have made the decision to publish The Lovecraft eZine every other month, instead of every month. And I want to make it VERY clear that this is NOT the first step to ending the magazine. It’s the opposite, in fact. I want to continue the video chats, the community, the blog, Facebook page, and in 2014 begin publishing Lovecraftian books that you’ll really love.
The Lovecraft eZine began as a monthly magazine. But now it’s so much more, and I’m excited about all of it. And there is more coming.
I realize that some of you might be disappointed in me for taking the eZine to every other month instead of every month. But I’m doing it because I truly believe that all of these additional things that you are enjoying now are important, too. And with my health issues, I truly am doing my very best. I’d rather do it this way than to put my health in such a state that I’d no longer be able to do this at all.
I will make you this promise: The Lovecraft eZine will be around for a very long time. And going to every other month will help me to do an even better job with the blog, the Lovecraftian news, the community, and everything else. So many of you have supported me with your finances. I won’t let you down.
The future is bright!
(P.S. Something I forgot to mention in this post: I typically publish 5 or 6 stories per issue; I will probably be able to add 2 more stories in each issue. So they will come every other month now, but they’ll be packed.)

Hey, whatever you need to do is good for me. This is a fantastic website and ezine, plus all the extras you provide day in day out. I can see it becoming even better with the new schedule as you will have even more time to work on it.

I can see by the number of responses here that your efforts are appreciated. I only recently found your blog (on FB, no doubt), but I am truly impressed by what I’ve seen. I think your decision to publish every other month sounds sensible. Look forward to getting to know you and your minions better. Thanks for your excellent work.

The zine is a great one! And a great contribution for those of us who enjoy HPL and Lovecraftiana. Spacing out that part of your effort sounds like the right thing to do. I really appreciate the sharing of news and discoveries via your blog work as well. It’s a whole package of good things, as far as I am concerned. I am just hoping that everything you’re doing for print will also be available digitally. Good thoughts for improvement of your quality of life with this adjustment!

I recall hearing something from a comedian who was on a transcontinental flight, one of the first to offer wifi. About midway through the flight there was a glitch and service was lost. Some other passenger looked over at him and said “Typical.” Nope, didn’t register profound amazement that he was in a chair 8 miles above the ground going greater than 300 mph and mostly had internet connection for the trip. The only thing noted was the inconvenience. I’m sure if there was a pile of money in this (nope I still haven’t hit the Powerball so stop asking), you could hire a managing editor for the eZIne and focus on other projects. As it is something of a loss (!!!!!), the fact that it gets published at all is a bit of a marvel. Keep up the good work.

Mike. If yout health were to take a turn for the worse due to you “overstretching resources”, where would we be, then? Besides, what is a little time (which is relative, anyway) bertween friends? 🙂 Not to mention the old “Quality, not quantity” chestnut.Bi-monthly’s fine. You take care of yourself, mate!!!

Mike, I keep telling every new Lovecraftian, that there is a grand Lovecraft-related party that has been going on among fans for many decades; and all of the events at the never-ending party happen in different buildings, different rooms, different cities, and different events. And yet, it is all still part of the same party. But some people bring very little to the party, while others, like yourself, truly, make the party! So whatever, and whenever you bring to the party, will always add something very special to the fun! Stay Crazy! And try to remember we are all at this party to just have a great time!

Mike: I appreciate what you do, And the high-caliber of Lovecraft Scholars like Robert Price and others who associate with the Lovecraft Ezine: that speaks volumes of the impact of your work. I know this is a decision that will carry the Ezine into the future. The other option – a world without the Lovecraft Ezine – is something many of us wouldn’t want to think about.
