As editor of The Lovecraft eZine, I consider it my job to let the readers know about Lovecraftian books.  And I try — I have a list of my favorites on this page.

But of course, it’s hard to keep up with everything.  So authors, I want to give you the opportunity to tell the world about your book!  Please comment below with your book title, your name, and whatever you’d like us to know about the book.

(And readers: if you want to buy one of these books, please use the eZine Amazon Portal.  It won’t cost you anything extra, but it will support the magazine.  Thanks!)

OK, authors, comment below!

  1. I have a Lovecraftian weird western series called MERKABAH RIDER. It’s about a Hasidic gunslinger tracking the renegade teacher who betrayed his mystic Jewish order of astral travelers to the Outer Gods. The Rider pits Judeocentric magic against Shub-Niggurath, the Yithians, Nyarlathotep, and other dangers in the course of the series as he learns the depths of his master’s betrayal and the scope of the true nature of the universe. The series consists of four books – TALES OF A HIGH PLANES DRIFTER, THE MENSCH WITH NO NAME, HAVE GLYPHS WILL TRAVEL and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEIRD WEST. You can read the first three pages and some reviews here – http://emerdelac.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/some-review-of-merkabah-rider/

  2. I have a little book called That Which Should Not Be. It is my love letter to Lovecraft. Description below.

Miskatonic University has a long-whispered reputation of being strongly connected to all things occult and supernatural. From the faculty to the students, the fascination with other-worldly legends and objects runs rampant. So, when Carter Weston’s professor Dr. Thayerson asks him to search a nearby village for a book that is believed to control the inhuman forces that rule the Earth, Incendium Maleficarum, The Inferno of the Witch, the student doesn’t hesitate to begin the quest.

Weston’s journey takes an unexpected turn, however, when he ventures into a tavern in the small town of Anchorhead. Rather than passing the evening as a solitary patron, Weston joins four men who regale him with stories of their personal experiences with forces both preternatural and damned. Two stories hit close to home as they tie the tellers directly to Weston’s current mission.

His unanticipated role as passive listener proves fortuitous, and Weston fulfills his goal. Bringing the book back to Miskatonic, though, proves to be a grave mistake. Quickly, Weston realizes he has played a role in potentially opening the gate between the netherworld and the world of Man. Reversing the course of events means forgetting all he thought he knew about Miskatonic and his professor and embracing an unknown beyond his wildest imagination.

  3. I am about 2/3 of the way through a book called “Chaos, Arizona” It is set around the turn of the century (1900s) at the end of the old west. The protagonist is a GLO (General Land Office predecessor to the BLM) official named Sandstrom who is in charge of homesteads, reservations, trading posts and over-seeing the mining and ranching in east central Arizona. A family of homesteaders are discovered dead in strange circumstances and the only survivor is found in a near catatonic state with a local band of Yavapai Indians. When he comes to he tells of something that came out of an old mine shaft deep in the earth. A strange woman named Deborah assumes care for the boy and tells Sandstrom more of what this all portends.

  5. Nine Rooms Deep By Thomas Zimmerman

Meet the Conocybe Collective; a degenerate art cult obsessed with hallucinogenic drugs and the works of HP Lovecraft. They reside in a brownstone by the Gowanus Canal; in a railroad apartment that seems to go on and on.

Scutch, a young painter freshly transplanted to Brooklyn, is enticed into the Collective by Pinch Pie; a weirding woman both seductive and repugnant, who knows all his deepest secrets.

Once inside the apartment, Scutch becomes lost in a vast funhouse maze of hanging blankets. And then the games begin: terrifying games of escalating perversion and violence, until Scutch reaches the absolute bottom: Nine Rooms Deep.

Also available as an audiobook. Download Chapter One for Free.

  6. Thanks for the opportunity Mike. I unwittingly wrote a Lovecraftian book in college. “The Portal Stone”. (http://www.amazon.com/The-Portal-Stone-ebook/dp/B004S81WOI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330371074&sr=8-1) It was developed from a short story that won a small writing contest.

A freak fall storm results in a lightening strike on the main building of the campus which opens a long sealed room containing an ancient evil. Parallel stories follow several college students and local kids as the evil begins to spread through the campus and surrounding town.

Drew from the genre, but was not following any established canon. Had some mild interest from agents and publishers in the years following, but it never got picked up. Self-published on Kindle a couple years ago and sell one every now and again, but don’t market it at all. One very nice, positive unsolicited review. It was written in the late 80s so it’s got a very period feel, lots of pop culture references and the locale is a real college, though the name was changed to, again unwittingly, a very Lovecraftian name “Provinceton”, but set in the midwest.

  7. Nice, Mike. Thanks for the opportunity. My WWII historical/Lovecraftian horror novel is soon going out of print from Marietta Press. It’s a story of true-to-life war experiences coupled with dark mystery as an unknown, menacing force appears in the Pacific Theater. If you’ve read my short stories, “Children of Burma” and/or “Epiphany: A Flying Tiger’s Story,” you’ll find that this novel builds on concepts first explored in those tales. 8. As everyone else has said, thanks for doing this Mike!

My first collection, NEVER BET THE DEVIL & OTHER WARNINGS (http://www.amazon.com/Never-Bet-Devil-Other-Warnings/dp/098488002X/) came out about this time last year and features ten tales of variously Lovecraftian bent, including a few that had previous appeared in places like HISTORICAL LOVECRAFT and THE BOOK OF CTHULHU 2, among others.

I also co-edited FUNGI (http://www.amazon.com/Fungi-Silvia-Moreno-Garcia/dp/0991675932/) with Silvia Moreno-Garcia for Innsmouth Free Press, which is chock-a-block with weird fungal fiction, from Hodgsonian mushroom people to even stranger things. It features a fantastic crop of some of the best folks doing Lovecraftian work today (if I do say so myself) including stories from Laird Barron, John Langan, W.H. Pugmire, Richard Gavin, Simon Strantzas, Molly Tanzer, and many more!

  9. I’m a big fan of pulp, and a bigger fan of Lovecraft. Out of my many many short stories and 12 fantasy novels, the Lovecraft influence is evident in many.

My pulp anthology, THE ZOMBIE RAY FROM OUTER SPACE & OTHER PULP TALES (http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Outer-Space-Other-Tales-ebook/dp/B008RAE470/) features not only the titular novella, which is rather Lovecraftian, but THE ELDRITCH HORROR FROM BEYOND THE NETHER VOID, a straight up Lovecraft pastiche, THE CAPTAIN AND THE QUEEN, a mash up of Lovecraft with Classic Star Trek, and another somewhat Lovecraftian tale, THE PYRAMID OF SKULLS.

In addition, my novels THE LEAGUE OF ANUBIS (http://www.amazon.com/League-Anubis-D-Madigan-ebook/dp/B00DXPEJEC) and CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED (http://www.amazon.com/Children-Damned-D-Madigan-ebook/dp/B00F7U8SXY) are very influenced by Lovecraft, and arguably takes place in the Lovecraft mythos (albeit a somewhat expanded one).

My most Lovecraftian work is available in the collection BLINK AND OTHER HORRORS, three short stories, two of which are certainly informed by Lovecraft, but not in his style.

It’s also available as a larger POD collection along with my other short works (including some more science fiction and horror offierings) in the following:

  15. My novel, Blind Shadow, co-authored with James A. Moore, is set in a rural mountain town in Northern Georgia. Two old friends, Sheriff Carl Price and private detective Wade Griffin, investigate the murder of another friend. What begins as a crime novel takes a sudden left turn into Lovecraftian horror when the lawmen begin to learn what truly hides in the shadow of the mountains.
One reviewer noted that the book read as if H.P. Lovecraft had written an episode of JUSTIFIED. Guns, Elder Gods, martial arts, horrible creatures from the Outer Dark, plus the world’s most dangerous English Literature professor.
Blind Shadows originally appeared as a signed, limited edition hardback from Arcane Wisdom and is now available as a paperback and Ebook at Amazon. Arcane Wisdom has just published the follow up novel Congregations of the Dead.

  17. H. P. Lovecraft in the Merrimack Valley by David Goudsward

This is my treatment of Lovecraft’s connections with the Merrimack Valley of coastal Massachusetts and New Hampshire, tracing HPL’s’s initial visits in the 1920s to such towns as Newburyport, Haverhill, and Hampstead, where he met such colleagues as Charles W. “Tryout” Smith, Myrta Alice Little, and Edgar J. Davis. Later visits clearly inspired many of the topographical features in such tales as “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and “The Shadow out of Time.” This book is illustrated with dozens of photographs of the locale, including many period snapshots that show the towns and other landmarks as they would have been seen by Lovecraft himself.

The alien invasion of the earth has begun, but this is no Independence day. Inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos, Shadows of the Past relates the tale of ancient Gods seeking a return to their former glory.

When Washington D.C Homicide Detective Sam Hardin is called to investigate a gruesome killing he stumbles upon the theft of an ancient alien dagger that had been discovered in the barren wastes of Antarctica. But this is no ordinary dagger. It has an odd effect on anyone it comes into contact with, for it contains the essence of an alien race that once ruled a young Earth.

Partially disabled Vietnam vet Jack Griffith has been counting down his final days as the cancer, compliments of his service in South East Asia, slowly consumes his body. While clearing a clogged storm drain he is accidentally stabbed by the dagger that had been stolen to repay a gambling debt. Surrounded by rats as death approaches he is given a second chance at life when that presence invades his body.

    But at what price?

  19. OK — I’ll go first here. THE CREEPING KELP is available in paperback and ebook on Amazon.

As for what’s inside the covers…. It’s kelp. It creeps. 🙂

    Paperback: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1937128156
    ebook: http://www.amazon.com/The-Creeping-Kelp-ebook/dp/B00D7Q2RCS

It’s a cautionary tale of what man is doing to the environment. A WW2 experiment resurfaces; a Shoggoth fragment meets some bits of jellyfish and some seaweed and together they decide they like plastic. They like it so much that they start to seek it out, and grow, and spread… and build.

f you are like me and grew up on those glorious nature run amok movies you will absolutely love The Creeping Kelp and I highly recommend it. – Famous Monsters of Filmland

The Creeping Kelp would make for a great beach read, and will give you shivers the next time you step on a piece of seaweed in the water. Highly recommended. – The Monster Librarian

Blending cinematic visuals, gore, humour, and Cthulhu mythos, this book is great fun and will satisfy gore hounds as well as those looking for something more indepth. With the use of historical diaries and notebooks, Meikle creates his own monstrous mythos and the book rattles along at a fantastic pace. – Terror Tree

  20. Thanks for this, Mike! My novella is called Black Smokers (by CJ Waller). The blurb:

When the sea floor in the Pacific mysteriously drops a few thousand feet, marine biologists, Tom Kinneard and Brett Gilman, accompanied by geologist Ailsa MacDonald, take a manned sub to investigate. What they discover not only re-writes the science textbooks, but also explains the mysterious disappearances of people born on the Lost Day: 29th February. Can they stop the rising of the Children of Dagon, even though one of their number may actually want it to happen?

Thank you to all and any who decide to check it out ^^D

    • Due out in February, Berlin Nights.
Although not strictly within the mythos, it certainly has the feel of it. Set in just post work war one Berlin and a Ukraine, it is an “Erotic, Occult, pulp thriller,” with an interesting difference… It is historically correct in many details, places, people, and traditions. Look for it at and the author at the AnachroCon, in February 2014, Atlanta!
