Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: The Best Lovecraft Audios!

Regular readers of this website know that I have a sizable Lovecraft audio collection.  What I don’t say often enough is that I consider The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society‘s audios to be the best in my collection.  And no, they are not free; each of them cost $10, but boy, are they worth it.  I’ve listened to each one of them over and over.

I’m not being paid a dime to plug them, by the way.  But I consider it part of my job to let my fellow Lovecraftians know about quality HPL stuff.  These are not mere readings — this is audio drama, with actors and sound effects!  It’s “a movie in your mind”, as Graphic Audio says.

You can be listening to them within moments, just by clicking on the appropriate link below.  Descriptions taken from their website:

At the Mountains of Madness: Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: At the Mountains of Madness brings Lovecraft’s tale to life as it might have been adapted for radio during his lifetime. In the style of The War of the Worlds and The Shadow, Dark Adventure Radio Theatre dramatizes HPL’s story with a cast of professional actors, excitingg sound effects and original music by Troy Sterling Nies (composer for The Call of Cthulhu). Relive the excitement of 1930s radio with one of HP Lovecraft’s most exciting and fascinating stories: At the Mountains of Madness.

The Dunwich Horror: Inspired by visits to rural Massachusetts and its folklore, Lovecraft created the memorable town of Dunwich and its most frightening family: the Whateleys. Add to this the mind-bending threat of Yog-Sothoth and an extended passage from the Necronomicon, and you have the ingredients for a memorably weird tale. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre brings the story to life in all its monstrous and miasmal glory. This old-time radio adaptation features a cast of more than a dozen professional actors, exciting sound effects and a thrilling original musical score by Troy Sterling Nies (composer for The Call of Cthulhu). Sit down, dim the lights, fire up the wireless and enjoy 75 minutes of exciting Lovecraftian drama, suspense and cosmic horror.

The Shadow Out of Time: (My personal favorite!) A strange case of amnesia strikes down a university professor. Five years later, he awakes with no recollection of the intervening time. He launches an investigation and discovers the horrifying reality behind his affliction, making a discovery that reverberates with cosmic horror.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth: A young man’s travels in search of antiquarian architecture and his own family history brings him to the ill-regarded Massachusetts town of Innsmouth. There he uncovers horrors beyond his worst imaginings, barely escaping with his life and sanity.

  1. How could you bring up DART and not mention the cool props? It costs a bit more, but with the CDs you get all kinds of nifty Lovecraftian goodies! Charts, maps, newspaper articles, pages torn from books of unearthly eldrich lore, all relating to the story unfolding before your ears.
