I need your opinion…

I’m going to start doing rewards for those who donate on a monthly basis.  For example, those who donate $2 a month will get something, those who donate $5 a month will get something a bit more valuable, and so on.  Here are the ideas I have so far:

  • Lovecraft eZine t-shirts
  • Lovecraft eZine coffee mugs
  • Lovecraft eZine bookmarks
  • Cthulhu and other Lovecraftian statues
  • Crochet Cthulhus
  • Lovecraftian books
  • Cthulhu chocolates and candies
  • Lovecraftian lingerie (ok, I’m kidding about that one!)

I will also have a webpage with a list of all monthly contributors and links to their websites.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Please comment below.

  1. Another random idea: What if you offered up copies of the artwork you used in your magazine to people who donate? Maybe just a really nice color photocopy signed by the artist or something like that.

  2. It sounds like a great idea Mike. I wish I could contribute donations, but I’m still unemployed and trying not to spend money on anything but bills, gas, and food right now. My freelance writing isn’t paying the bills, but someday I hope it will. Once I’m back on my feet financially I hope to become a regular donor to the eZine. Someone suggested a membership patch and/or sticker. I think that is a fun idea as well to show off your love of the eZine and all things Lovecraftian.

  3. I actually like the idea of a store, as it let’s people pay for the stuff they want when they want it (as per someone’s comment above that maybe people would donate a bunch and get good stuff those of us on a tighter budget couldn’t afford), but you might also try, maybe no actual physical stuff, but there are several websites on line, not the least of which is http://www.arkhambazaar.com (they’re local to me, I’ve gotta plug them), that sell Lovecraft merchandise. You might see if they want to partner up, and maybe if people donate so much to the magazine, they get a special sale code for a discount on website merchandise. Something like that. Helps the e-zine get donations, gets them some advertising. Win-win all around.

  4. How about a store section where people could purchase coffee mugs, t shirts, sculptures etc.? Maybe this site could sell autographed books by Pugmire, or Joshi or others with part of the proceeds going to the site. Maybe produce a yearly anthology of Lovecraftezine stories. Readers could vote on which stories would be included in the anthology.

  5. Great idea, but fiscally it would be better to canvass donations of perks by authors and artists, so you’re not in a position of having to pay for them: that could prove costly. Personally, I am quite happy to donate a modest sum on a monthly basis, as I have been doing – that without expecting a perk. The eZine is the perk!

  6. I’m a 99c/month subscriber now. I’m on a very low income, but I guess I could stretch it a bit further. I’m in the UK though, so I don’t want you going to the expense of shipping stuff over here. That would negate what little I could give.
The only thing I’m uncomfortable about is the idea that those who can afford to donate more & don’t might do so to get big rewards, which will not be available to the less well off who are donating what they can.
This is a fact of life & business though & you should do whatever helps keep the magazine running.

  7. I think it’s a great idea, Mike, but much as I like goodies (esp. anything by Wilum!), I’d rather the money go to supporting the site and eZine. One idea, though, occurs to me: why not see about publishing the eZines collected into books, possibly signed by authors? I’d definitely buy those! But if you go with rewards, books, bookmarks and/or statuary would be cool!

  8. A club or society or order, whatever you want to call it, would be cool. The HP Lovecraft Historical Society has a membership option. I think most of their perks are weak, but I think the idea is a good one. You could have discounts on e-books and/or paper books, not sure how you’d arrange that, maybe have authors donate them like Wilum is doing (go Wilum!). Maybe nicely done stickers or shirts, obviously there are many options for this. I would definitely pay more for a membership as long as it was worth it.

  9. A Lovecraft eZine membership coin or patch would be pretty cool. It could be a reward for being a monthly contributor. Kind of cool being part of a Lovecraftian club or eZine “army” ; )

  10. Great idea and it will definitely make me contribute more a month.
What about free or low cost ebooks too or would that be a problem?
I would love some bookmarks and other things.

  11. I think the idea is awesome. Maybe you could do something like a premium membership in which you get the issues and some kind of gimmick as well.

For example someone who pays 60$ gets one shirt and all the next 12 issues, or pay 100$ and get a book or something.
