New and upcoming Lovecraftian movies

I felt it was time to do another post about new and upcoming Lovecraftian-themed movies.  If you feel I’ve missed something, comment below.

UPCOMING:

Devoured: I can’t find a synopsis for this movie, but the trailer looks extremely interesting to me.  I asked them when it will be released, and they replied that they are still looking for a distributor.  I hope we get to see this one.

.

Ages of Madness: Again, no synopsis that I could find, but the teaser looks great.

.

.

Prometheus: I am SO looking forward to seeing this.  Watch the trailer below… it seems very Lovecraftian.  A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

JUST RELEASED:

Die Farbe: I watched this recently, and it just might be the best Lovecraftian movie yet.  Seriously.  A German film adaptation of “The Colour Out of Space”. You can buy it at this link.

The Whisperer in Darkness: If you’re a regular reader of this ezine, then you probably already know about this movie.  Suffice it to say that it lives up to the hype; this is a wonderful Lovecraftian movie.  H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of suspense and alien horrors is brought to life in the style the classic horror films of the 1930s like Dracula, Frankenstein and King Kong. Using the “Mythoscope” process — a mix of modern and vintage techniques, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has strived to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted.  Buy Whisperer in Darkness at this link.

Melancholia: I’m probably going to rent this one today.  An ezine reader who has seen it brought it to my attention, and told me that it was very Lovecraftian in its theme of hopelessness and the insignificance of the human race in the cosmos.  I’m looking forward to watching it.  Described as “A beautiful movie about the end of the world”, MELANCHOLIA tells the story pf two sisters (Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg), who find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth. Rent Melancholia at this link (streaming).

  1. For I know Guillermo del Torro is a huge lovecraftian, I like to see the movie “Don’t be afraid of the dark” as an adaptation of “The lurking fear”. Even when the plot and characters doesn’t match, the movie could play in the same location after or before the actual book.

  2. If I may add some

Altitude – After a mysterious malfunction sends their small plane climbing out of control, a rookie pilot and her four teenage friends find themselves trapped in a deadly showdown with a supernatural force. http://bit.ly/GOu9dd

The Mist – A freak storm unleashes a species of blood-thirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. http://imdb.to/GtMt4

The Objective – A group of Special Ops Reservists on a mission in the harsh and hostile terrain of Afghanistan find themselves lost in a Middle Eastern “Bermuda Triangle” of ancient evil. http://imdb.to/ACoqz

They’re not that new but not imho not that well known, but definitely worth watching.

  4. My husband, early this morning, suddenly exclaimed portentously, “This will be GLORIOUS!!” He was talking about “Prometheus,” which trailer he had just seen. Apparently it’s a prequel to “Alien”. It sounds really good.

  5. yeah, they look good. I’m annoyed I missed Melancholia at the cinema & will be renting. Heard very interesting things about it. Of course Prometheus looks brilliant, and probably will be if Ridley Scott ahs been allowed to have real control, though I’ve heard that’s not quite the case. Want to see it anyway. The German ‘Colour out of Space’ does look excellent, as does ‘Whisperer in Darkness’, Will be keeping an eye out for both of those.
    Thanks, Mike. 🙂
