Are Cthulhu Cultists really villains?

Well… yeah, you reply.  Of course they’re the “bad guys”.  But do they really see themselves that way?

In today’s Lovecraft eZine video chat, we’ll be talking about those pesky characters in Lovecraftian stories who want Cthulhu and his brothers to return.  You know, like the cult in The Call of Cthulhu.  Why do these people want the world to end?  Do they think they’re doing the right thing?

One way to write a good villain is to remember that they usually don’t see themselves as the villain — many of them think they’re right, they feel like they’re doing what needs to be done.  Is that how the Cthulhu Cult feels?

At least, we’ll begin by talking about that — by the time the chat is over, we could be talking about anything from movies to yacht prices in West Palm Beach.

As always, this video chat is at 6:00pm EST.  (Here is a simple time zone converter.)

All Lovecraftians are welcome. If you wish to join the video chat, email me at michaeldaviswriter@gmail.com for instructions. It’s easy; you just need a Google Plus account and a webcam.

OR, you can simply watch it LIVE (or the recorded version, later) by going to the Lovecraft eZine front page at 6pm EST (we chat every Sunday at that time): www.lovecraftzine.com

Remember: The main purpose of these Sunday video chats is to bring Lovecraftians together for great conversation. You don’t have to be an author to join us — just a fan!

  1. I love this concept, but unfortunately, I’m going to be stuck at work until 6, so will have to catch it later tonight. Personally, I’ve ALWAYS tried to stress this point, that everything is relative and “bad guys” are a frame of reference.

That being said, if we consider Cthulhu’s ability to “speak” into the minds of certain individuals, to share his gospels, as it were, while sleeping, and that many cultists probably feel this touch quite strongly, that opens up a whole new can of tentacles and everything is possible.

Some may wish to kill the innocent in a hopeless attempt to protect them, some to writhe in a frenzied bacchanal of chaos and mayhem in worship to their lord, or some to just use it as an excuse to embrace that oft teenage desire to be insane or evil.

My two cents, it probably depends on the cultist.

Looking forward to seeing all of yours.
