To follow up on my earlier question, I agree that Lovecraft meant the name to be alien to human tongues, but I meant the actual definition of the Greek word “chthon”. I am sure his grandfather’s ( Whipple Van Buren Phillips) library contained many Greek works of mythology which refer to “chthon”.

Is it simply a coincidence that the word “chthon” and the name “Chthulhu” at least sound similar, but share much of the same mythological references?
