I just spoke with Wilum again on the phone. He is waiting to hear back on a test to see if he can go home tomorrow or not. So, pray to the elder gods and keep your fingers crossed for our friend W.H. Pugmire.
He did say that he is feeling better today, so I hope that is an indication of a good result on this test. He’s very bored in the hospital… I know how that feels. By the time you’ve been in this long, you’re ready to go AWOL.
I’ll check in with him tonight to see how the test went — or, if any of his other friends reading this want to, they could make that call instead, and let me know so I can let all of you know. If I don’t hear from anyone, I’ll call him this evening.
And thanks to everyone for all the messages to Wilum. My wife is printing them out, laminating, and overnighting them from work today. (Thanks, Honey!)

Mike,
Thanks for all the updates. Please add my note of concern and well wishes to the next batch you send along to Wilum. Though I don’t know him personally, I am a great fan of his work. I hope he makes a full recovery and can go back to the lifestyle he enjoys.

I’m very happy to hear Wilum is feeling a bit better: I hope he gets good news from the test! Had I a number, I would call him, but as someone else has posted, it’s probably better to limit the calls. Just let him know we are all thinking of him and wish him well!

This is very good sounding news. It’s really nice about the laminating of the comments and overnighting of them to Wilum. I believe he would love that.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Mike. I’d call, but I only have the home phone, and I’m guessing one *more* message won’t help matters. Please let him know that he’s in our prayers…dark and otherwise. 😉

Incidentally, I’m very glad for the possibility for him getting out tomorrow. That’s got to be good!

If he does go home, and needs to rest, who is going to take care of his mother? I know he does much for her. But he needs to be taken care of himself. What’s to be done?

Exactly what I was thinking. I wish I was rich, I’d buy him a really nice hotel room to live in for 2 months, or hire a full-time person to help his mother, or… something.
I just don’t know. He NEEDS to rest and have no stress at all for a while.

Only one thing: having had experience with someone suffering from what Wilum at least had suspected (based on past history) was wrong, it is very important for him to avoid stress, and take it easy, at least until the doctors indicate otherwise. As he has seen lately, even if he’s feeling much better, it doesn’t take much to bring that to a screeching halt and put him in even worse shape than before… so take things gradually, take the regiment prescribed seriously, and just pamper himself for a little while, until he gets his strength back and is GENUINELY, rather than APPARENTLY, better.
As someone else has said, you’ve touched a lot of lives, Wilum, so please take care of yourself. You mean a lot more to a lot more people than I think you yourself realize….

That is very true. It is especially easy to feel better in the hospital after a few days, because (depending on the situation of course) they sometimes give you painkillers, etc., that make you feel temporarily better. You said it very well, if he does get to go home, he needs to be able to rest. I hope he is able to do that at home.
