Win a Cthulhu sculpture, Cthulhu chocolate, and more!

Everyone seems to love the contests… so here’s another one, and there will be FOUR winners this time!  Please read the following carefully:

FIRST PRIZE is the Cthulhu sculpture (similar to picture on the right — a brand new one is being sculpted just for this contest).  To win first prize, you must do the following:

  • Subscribe via email to  Lovecraft eZine (top right corner of this webpage).   If you’re already a subscriber, you don’t need to do anything.
  • Comment below (tell us about yourself, how you got into Lovecraft, or just say hello). 
  • Tell your friends on Facebook and Twitter about Lovecraft eZine and link to the magazine (www.lovecraftzine.com).  If you are only on Facebook, or only on Twitter, that’s acceptable, just spread the word with the one you use.  If you are one of the five people on the planet who is not on Facebook OR Twitter, then blog about Lovecraft eZine.  (If you don’t have a blog either, then you’re out of luck!)  You must then email me at michaeldaviswriter@gmail.com with the Facebook and/or Twitter and/or blog link where you hyped the ezine.

Next Thursday, February 2, 2012, I will randomly choose the lucky winner from everyone who meets the above requirements.  (Yes, item 3 is a bit of a pain, but it’s a cool prize… and don’t you want to tell all your friends about Lovecraft eZine? 😉 )

  1. I first learned of The Great Overlord Cthulu Fthgn from my boyfriend. He was reading H.P. Lovercraft at the dinner table, and started then and there to teach me the ways of following Cthulhu, like a good puny mortal. I learned so quickly to let other people summon him, lest I die in the ensuing destruction of the Great Cthulhu’s rage; I learned of the Shggoth, and NYARLATHOTEP, and the horrors that await upon The Awakening of The UnMerciful One. My boyfriend and I now collect Cthulhu things, and plan on having a Cthulhu Follower gathering in October.

  4. What great prizes! I’m saying hello, and that I bizarrely came to read Lovecraft after seeing In the Mouth of Madness. Not a fantastic movie, but Lovecraft’s ideas were evident enough that it got me curious enough to buy a book…

  5. i’ve been following the Lovectaft eZine online for quite some time and have somehow missed out on the newsletter entirely. Here’s making up for that major mistake.

    On a personal level: Lovecraft reader since I’m a teenager, now officially a Pulver-fanatic and enjoy the magazine due to it’s variety.

  6. I was exposed to C’thulhu when I was fooled into watching the 1920’s looking “Call of C’thulhu” silent movie, just to find out it was made in 2005…Oh the eldritch horror! Lurking horror that cannot be erased from my mind but comes to me unbidden in my dreams! That hideous archaic monstrosity! What a hellish jest was played on me by human madness, callousness and cruelty, dragging me into this hideously Archaean otherworldly madness!

  8. My first exposure to Lovecraft was the infamous Collect Call of Cathulhu episode of The Real Ghostbusters. I spent my teenage years thinking I should probably look up Lovecraft. It finally happened when I was twenty; I asked a friend about the “Nyarlathotep Inside” sticker adorning his laptop. His endorsement was enough to get me started.

  12. I started reading Lovecraft stories back in Jr. High School and have played and run Call of Cthulhu RPG games since CoC 1st Edition. Thanks for hosting this eZine. I’m looking forward to sharing the cosmic e-horror with my friends!

  13. Hey there! I guess I got into Lovecraft after asking one of my older friends what his tattoos meant. He had just gotten the non-canonical RPG Elder Sign tattooed on his arm and I thought it was super cool. He proceeded to tell me about his Nyarlathotep Bloody Tongue tattoo and all of that noise. I read everything I could get my hands on, and even played the Call of Cthulhu RPG a bit.

    Side note, my band has a song called “Shub Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with 1000 Young” and several others that reference Lovecraft.

    Also, today, I taught “Dagon” to my 9th grade class.

  15. Good Eeev’ning.
    I am a longtime follower of HPL; my first Short Story collection was “The Doom That Came to Sarnath,” a Ballantine Adult Fantasy paperback which I bought new (at about age 12) and still have. I’d probably read all of his fiction by the time I graduated from high school. I definitely know a ghoul from a night-gaunt, a Mi-Go from a Tcho-Tcho.

  19. I first started reading Lovecraft when I was about 13 years old. I am 21 now, and am still obsessed with his work. He is my biggest artistic influence in my own work, and I hope to one day adapt some of his stories into quality films. ( I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account, but I posted a journal about this contest on my deviantART page, which can be viewed here: http://chaz-666.deviantart.com/ . Not sure if this means I’m still qualified, though.)

  20. i was between 8 – 10 years old when i saw the film The Unnameable and then was even more fascinated when i saw it was a book. I read one of his anthology’s (don’t remember which one) and I’ve been an avid fan ever since.

  24. When I was a young boy my Father used to read Lovecraft stories aloud to me, so that was the start. I am very much a long time fan. I have the Special Necronomicon Edition of Lovecraft’s tales and at least three other copies of his works and it’s ironic that I’ve been actually looking for a Cthulhu statue (that my poor butt can afford lol).

  28. I got into Lovecraft in college. As I read and re-read the stories I realized that HPL was a natural way to combat depression. I mean, how bad can your day look compared to the average Lovecraftian protagonist?

  29. I am a HUGE Lovecraft fan! I got into it through my own self-explorations. I had always been a fan of Cthulhu, but never read the full H.P. Lovecraft version up until a few years ago when I purchased a “Best of Lovecraft” book (Cover illustrated by Mike Mignola). Since then I’ve been unquestionably hooked!

    I am a devout Lovecraftian and Chtulhu worshipper. My ultimate plan is to find the most talented artist I can and have him do his version of Cthulhu as a back piece tattoo that wraps around my neck and shoulders.

  30. Amazing contest!I’m ashamed to say I haven’t visited this site before now,but I’m glad I did.
    I first got into Lovecraft I think in middle school,my American History teacher lived in Salem and talked about all that stuff during class,and graded us on it….awesome! (I don’t think he teaches anymore,shame.I guess he found what he was looking for.)

  33. I was introduced to Mr Lovecraft during a thunderstorm in the attic of a small house in the middle of the woods in Rhode Island. My aunt told about a long dead but still sleeping god and said we were going to try and summon him. During the height of this, I began to cry and when there was a huge bolt of lightning and a clap of thunder right over the house I ran away as fast as possible. When she found me in the basement she explained who Lovecraft was and about his writings. Been hooked ever since.

  35. Hey, I heard a lot before I read a single page of his works. At some point I just bought the complete works and got hooked immediately. So many influences on pop culture. E.g. the Necronomicon being referenced in so many places.

    My interest in Lovecraft began in the 80’s when I taped Re-Animator off a local Los Angeles TV station. The credits rolled “H.P. Lovecraft’s Re-Animator” and I wondered “Who is this guy?”.
    It felt pretty cool to get to tell Stuart Gordon that he was the person that introduced me to Mr. Lovecraft over drinks at The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland last year.

  38. I *love* the statuette, and imagine the redo will be even better.

    I’ve always thought that the statue is one of the creepiest features of “The Call of Cthulhu” as a story. In a certain sense, I think you could take the statue as emblematic of all of HPL’s fiction. Something small that opens up a universe entire aschew.

    I first came to HPL from the used bookstore, the 1980’s paperbacks with all the gory covers. I bought all I could find, and then gradually got more serious about him. Joshi’s revision of the Arkham House editions have a special place in my personal library.

    I, unfortunately, have not had the chance to read a book or story written by the great Mr. Lovecraft, but I have read some of the stories on here, and I absolutely LOVED them. Here’s to a great many more Lovecraftian stories! Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!

  43. I actually judged a book by it’s cover when I bought my first Lovecraft book back in the 1970s. I have been a fan ever since. The Lovecraft E-zine is a great way to find and enjoy new stuff. I haven’t found a story by Lovecraft in years that I haven’t already read, but I had no idea how many others were writing new stories to go with the originials. Great stuff!

  44. I bought a book with lovecraftian fan-fiction in it around 13 years ago. I didn’t really like most of the stories. They seemed to lack something but there was this one story, “The Call of Cthulhu” which I found amazing (and which was the only one written by Lovecraft himself).

    So I decided to get more of his stories and haven’t regretted it to this day 🙂

    My 2nd husband (well, now my 2nd ex-husband LOL) was the one to get me into Lovecraft and dark fantasy horror – although I’d had exposure to the idea of Cthulu as far back as my first year in college and a friend who had a t-shirt with the saying “Smile, Cthulu loathes you” (which I SOOOO want, although I’ll make due with my “Cthulu for President – why chose the lesser evil” for now). I’m really drawn to the idea of the Old Ones for some reason … hmmm ….

  47. I came to Lovecraft late in life and didn’t read one of his stories till law school. I fell in love pretty quickly and decided to include loving tributes to the man and his work in my first novel, That Which Should Not Be. It’s my hope that people who read my book will want to seek out the master and read the original. More people need Lovecraft in their lives. And yes, I want that sculpture.

  48. I am an avid reader of many subjects and genres, a paranormal investigator, and a freelance writer of mostly fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I think my first exposure to Lovecraft’s writing was when I was around 13 or 14 when I read a collection called “The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre.” I was instantly hooked with a lifelong love of his work.

  49. I started reading Lovecraft a long time ago (much longer than I really want to admit) and try to introduce him to friends whenever I can. His brand of cosmic/psychological/emotive horror is my favorite and he is certainly the master of it…… A Cthulhu statue would be quite the conversation piece in my office at school… LOL

  50. I had been reading horror mags for years that would often mention Lovecraft so finally one day I picked up an anthology and I now have an entire shelf of Lovecraft and Lovecraftian lit. My favourite is Shadow over Innsmouth. It really made the hair on my neck stand up when the main character was trying to get away from the inhabitants of the town. It’s great to be a part of this Lovecraft community. Most people I know barely know anything about the man so it is great to find like-minded people here.

  58. Hey, I’m Jack and I’m new here, just introduced to the zine. I’ve been reading HP since early high school, years ago. I think one of the best parts about the Mythos is how it’s crept into, well, everything. It’s hard not to see some genre show, movie, or even comic books, where there isn’t some reference to Old Ones or Icthulu or something that’s inspired (or an homage) to Cthulhu, and that always makes me smile.

    i dont know how i got in the world of lovecraft, but i think that, as a rpg player, its a common thing to go to dark places sometimes 😉

    my first tale was Dagon, in the penguin press books (or something), but soon, i searched for more books in my language (portuguese). we had a great year, with 3 more books in our shelves (sp?)

  62. got into lovecraft by READING LOVECRAFT 😀

    i’m generally a morbid guy, i enjoy horror, and have a tremendous soft spot for the incredibly verbose, so in a way it was a sort of instant bond with lovecraft’s work. i do think the first thing i read from him was the call of cthulhu proper, followed by a few short story compilations.

  63. That sculpture looks great! I took a trip to Providence last year and followed the HPL walking tour. I got lots of great pics, some cool mementos and really enjoyed seeing some of the homes and sites that inspired Lovecraft. I highly recommend to anyone who can do so that you go. And be sure to visit his grave. It was a surreal experience to be there.

  65. I found out about him through the C.N.I.B (Canadian National Institute for the Blind,) a Canadian organization that has helped me with my eye condition. They introduced me to Lovecraft and Poe through their talking book library. I am entranced every time I hear a story or read them.

    This site has helped me stay connected, and I have made a few new friends.

  69. Such a cool contest! And a great product in the eZine! I discovered HPL by reading a two page supplement for Call of Cthulhu in Dragon Magazine in high school (ok like 15 years ago) and thought it was cool, then stumbled across the Lurker at the Threshold, which though plodding I was keen on. I then devoured everything at the library by the master. I own their copy of the old Dunwich Horror and Others (thanks to my mom’s dog slobbering on it!) and of course the RPG was a treat. Now hooked on the Elder Sign and Necronomicon iPhone games… the Stars are Right! (Must add that Yog-Sothoth is my favorite Outer God… Ia!)

  70. My father used to read me pulp horror and sci-fi when I was a kid. Robert Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft and others were as familiar to me by the age of 10 as Dr. Seuss is to most kids these days.

  76. My introduction to Lovecraft came through a fascinated reading of “The Lurker On the Threshold” by Messrs. Lovecraft and Derleth. A gap of many years followed, when my interest in matters Lovecraftian met with the burgeoning Internet. I should read more Lovecraft, but my interests point towards S.T. Joshi’s exhaustive biography, and contemporary stories which can be called, loosely or not, Lovecraftian. At this time I do not miss an issue of the Lovecraft eZine. Mr. Davis is doing a tremendous service to us, we humble Lovecraft followers.

    I got into Lovecraft back in the 80s when I picked up a copy of one of the DelRay compilations. It’s been an on-again/off-again relationship ever since.

  78. I got into Lovecraft when I was 13, after coming across his name over and over while reading interviews with favorite comic artists (e.g., Mike ‘Hellboy’ Mignola).

    The first story I read was “The Horror in the Museum.” My local library had two of the Arkham House collections, which I repeatedly checked out until I got a copy of the Del Rey “Bloodcurdling Tales…”.

    In addition to lovecraftzine.com, I also love hppodcraft.com.

    I knew who Cthulhu was from a young age being into comics and whatnot, never had a real grasp on the whole Lore though.

  84. Picked up the collection Dagon and other Macabre tales back when I was teenager and I have enjoyed Lovecraft ever since. Although my first exposure to the Cthulhu mythos came from the original Dungeons & Dragons Deities & Demigods book. The Cthulhu statue would stand proudly next to my Lovecraft collection!

  88. I got into HPL in High School. I actually answered the final essay question on the AP English test with one of his stories, and passed! I owe 4 free credit hours of freshman comp in college to ‘The Tomb’! Ia!

  89. I think my brother introduced me to HPL when I was in High School, since then I have never stopped reading and re-reading Lovecraft. I even published a literary article about “Dagon” and am working on another about “Haunter of the Dark.”

  90. A statue like that would be fun to have around. Most of my friends don’t know who Lovecraft is, or know any of his stories, so I thnk it would be fun to have them come over and tell them a tale of how I acquired the relic, ala “Call of Cthulhu” style. All I will need will be a small chest with files entitled Cthulhu Cult. ^~(;;;)~^

    • Hello, congrats to the creators of this ‘zine. More Lovecraft love is always welcomed. I fell in love with his work as a wee kid. Growing up in Providence made it more fun as well. Still live here.
      I run a Lovecraft group on fb ( H.P. Lovecraft) as well as a horor fiction group (Alone with thje Horrors). Feel free to visit and post.
