New “Music of Erich Zann” Movie, and “Lovecraft Paragraphs”

It’s video day here at Lovecraft eZine!  I received the following email about a new “Music of Erich Zann” movie, and I have to say that the preview looks awesome:

Hi Mike!  I just wanted to drop a line and say how great the Lovecraft Ezine is and what a fantastic source of info and fiction it has provided.  I noticed that you’ve posted on both Facebook and on the site occasionally trailers and info on short films and Lovecraft adaptations and thought to send you a link to our take on “The Music of Erich Zann”. It was filmed last summer in Helsinki, Finland, over the period of three days and now is being released in February.  The story takes some liberties with the adaptation, mostly due to our schedule and budget, but it is (in our opinion) a loving and close take on the original short.  It will start touring festivals in February and will come out on DVD in March. We’re looking into Amazon and other distribution forms as well.  Hope you enjoy it and thank you again for the wonderful job you’re doing with the Ezine!  — Jonathan Bloom, Director

Our friend Reber Clark also emailed me:

I thought you might like to know that my movie Lovecraft Paragraphs is now up on YouTube.  From S. T. Joshi – “LOVECRAFT PARAGRAPHS is a scintillating and breathtakingly original visual experience. The ‘paragraphs’ from Lovecraft’s work have been chosen with exceptional care to highlight some of Lovecraft’s most powerful and provocative utterances; and the images chosen to accompany them emphasise exactly those elements of weirdness, cosmicism, terror, and otherworldly beauty that distinguish Lovecraft’s stories. Every reader of Lovecraft will come away with an enhanced appreciation for the Master’s writing and imagination from seeing this splendid film.”  LOVECRAFT PARAGRAPHS was accepted and shown at the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, October 2-3-4, 2009.

  2. Thanks everybody for taking a look at this thing. It was a very early effort and I’m really more of a music guy than a video guy. Better projects are in the works which I hope will live up to what the Lovecraftian community deserves!

  3. That was great! I love to see these short films. The mixing was a little difficult though. Some of the sounds kind of drowned out the narration at times but still, most enjoyable.

  4. Hi Nick. Yep, I have heard that a few times! 🙂 The reason for the synth voices was a quote I found from one of HPL’s letters to Frank Belknap Long:

“I like a tale to be told as directly and as impersonally as possible, from an angle of utter and absolute detachment.” Howard Phillips Lovecraft, in a letter to Frank Belknap Long, – August 2, 1926

So as an experiment it sorta worked but the voices can wear on one’s ears a bit! Thanks for watching it!

  5. I remember seeing Lovecraft Paragraphs at the HPLFF in 2009, and yes they are good paragraphs, but I had trouble with the narration in that is sounds like it’s been read through a machine, a Mi-Go speak box or some such device. I’d much rather hear it narrated by a human voice with some characterization to make it more deep and compelling, because they really are great paragraphs and lines of thought.
