I’m not sure how I feel about this — I’m kind of like Indiana Jones: “It belongs in a museum!” To which you might answer, “So do you!”
Anyway, someone is auctioning four of H.P. Lovecraft’s letters on eBay, and I’d rather see a Lovecraft eZine reader with some extra bucks get one or more of them than anyone else, so I’m linking to the auctions below. (If you do buy one or more, please do us a favor and scan it in and email it to me so I can share it with everyone!)

Letter one — Letter two — Letter three — Letter four

I actually work for a Rare Books and Special Collections department. I asked my supervisor if we might want these but she said no, because we don’t have a Lovecraft collection and there’s no local connection.
I tried.

Jeez… I’m just happy to own a mouse-eaten copy of the Weird Tales edition with the first printing of “Call of Cthulhu”. Damn mice. Nice birthday present, though. I need to frame it.

Thanks for the heads-up. Love this quote from one of ’em… “Life is a matter of mixed chance & mechanics, & there is as little reason to be a pessimist as to be an optimist.”
high quality fatalism!!

Who authenticated these letters?

I’d like to know the provenance of those letters—could they be stolen?

The same seller has already sold a letter written by Lovecraft to Robert Nelson’s mother, see:

That one went for just under $900. It would be nice if someone had a “war chest” to pick some of these up and donate them to John Hay.

Someone needs to purchased the H. P. Lovecraft letters to Frank Belknap Long that are selling for something like $150,000. And then give the letters to John Hay Library so that S. T. Joshi can transcribe them. But who would be generous enough to do such a thing (or wealthy enough)? If the letters are eventually sold individually, we may lose them forever.
