S.T. Joshi’s favorite Lovecraftian movie, and this Sunday’s chat topic

The Last Wave
The Last Wave

I asked S.T. Joshi what his favorite Lovecraftian-themed movie was (in last Sunday’s video chat). His reply was The Last Wave.

It was cool to hear him say so, because I watched it for the first time a couple of months ago, and at the time I too felt that it is very Lovecraftian.

Check out the trailer for The Last Wave… creepy, and full of atmosphere:

On this Sunday’s Lovecraft eZine video chat, we’re going to start by discussing The Box (2009), and after that, I’m going to ask all of you what YOUR favorite Lovecraftian-themed movie is.   And bear in mind, I’m talking THEMED. Movies that you feel do a great job with Lovecraftian themes, NOT movies based on Lovecraft’s stories.

It should be a fun chat! We do this every Sunday at 6pm EST. If you want to join or watch, go here for details: Lovecraft eZine Video Chats, every Sunday at 6pm EST.

See you then!

You can buy or rent The Last Wave on Amazon, on DVD or streaming.

  1. I just saw the film, and I appreciated the themes of secret and ancient knowledge, of discovering that one’s reality and place is the universe is vastly (and darkly) different widely-held beliefs and perceptions, and of undeniable predetermined fate. It’s a good and weird film that I somehow missed for many years.

  2. the Last Wave, which I saw when it first released, has always been on my list of most disturbing/haunting films. I never thought about it being Lovecraft thematic but I can certainly see it now.

  3. The Last Wave is my second favorite Peter Weir film (first is Picnic at Hanging Rock of course). I remember seeing a trailer for The Last Wave when my dad took me to see Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I was 7ish and as much as I loved Invasion’ The Last Wave’s trailer was far more terrifying. Years later I finally saw ‘Wave and it captivated me. It captures a haunting apocalyptic atmosphere unmatched by any other film.
