War of the Worlds vs. Cthulhu

The Martians picked the wrong planet to invade!  Tobias White sent this to me, and I think it’s a really fun idea.  View more of his artwork at his website.

  1. Speaking of Wells and Lovecraft it would be unforgivable if I failed to mention Mr. Don Webb’s story “To Mars and Providence” in K.J. Anderson’s collection War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches.

  2. Well, I’d hardly be surprised if H.G. Wells inspired Lovecraft in any way. Some of his works do have elements of cosmic horror, especially The War of the Worlds. Let’s see, a race of inhuman creatures from outer space arrive on Earth without concern for mankind; our own very near-extinction (perhaps because of our insignificance in a vastly uncaring universe?), and the most powerful equipment the military has to offer can stall them at best.

    • You know I have looked into that myself to see if Wells had an influence on Lovecraft but I haven’t seen any direct evidence, but merely speculations. It wouldn’t be surprising though if it turned out to be true.
