Scans/photos of the first appearance of “The Shadow Out of Time”, in “Astounding Stories”, 1936

The Shadow Out of Time by H.P. Lovecraft was first published in the June 1936 issue of Astounding Stories.  Here are some uber-cool scans and photos of that original appearance:

  1. Magnificent! Although… despite knowing it was done to provide a sense of scale, one still wants to shake the artist and say, “no humans and great race in the same shot!”

  2. I see this one on Ebay now and again and I have wanted to purchase it, but it’s never a good time.

  3. Had to buy a copy. It is reprinted in Astounding Stories: The 60th Anniversary Collection (long out of print but a lot cheaper than the magazine).

  4. I’ve never seen this before! I wonder what Lovecraft made of the illustrations? I doubt if he looked at them and thought that the artist had recreated exactly what he had being seeing in his mind’s eye. It makes you realise how much Lovecraft would have appreciated the modern day illustrations if he was alive today…..
