“What I’m reading” — a horror recommendation from artist Trevor Henderson

Introducing a new series on this website! Every Tuesday, a member of the horror community will share their recommendation.

Kicking things off is horror artist Trevor Henderson! Here’s a glimpse into his recent reads, in his own words:

I recently read the newly reissued collection of horror stories by Karl Edward Wagner, In a Lonely Place. I loved how Wagner was able to transplant genre elements (like dark fantasy and Lovecraftian cosmic horror) into his home of rural Kentucky.

My favorites were “Sticks”, a story dealing with weird fiction itself as a conduit to horror, and “.022 Swift”, which manages to shift genres several times across its short length, before ending on a truly chilling note. Overall, I loved the collection, with several classic stories to be found.

Purchase In a Lonely Place here.

Order Trevor Henderson’s new book Scarewaves: “The small town of Beacon Point has always been plagued by eerie local phenomena. It’s a town where disappearances are common, strange creatures have been sighted with unnerving frequency, and a ghastly secret lurks in the woods. The adults in town are oblivious to these strange occurrences. Others prefer not to talk or even think about them. But over the course of several terrifying nights, a group of kids will come face to face with the horrors hiding within their sleepy town. Guided by the mysterious radio host Alan Graves, they must follow the clues to a terrifying secret before it eats them alive.”
