Every Tuesday, a member of the horror community shares what they are reading with us! This week, it’s author Robert Levy. He writes:
I’m currently close to finishing Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s latest novel Silver Nitrate, and am enjoying it immensely. Set in 1990s Mexico, it’s the story of Monserrat and Tristán, down-on-their-luck best friends who work in the television and film industry—Monserrat as a sound editor, and Tristán as an actor. When Tristán’s new neighbor turns out to be the legendary horror director Abel Urueta, the pair are drawn into a decades-old mystery of cursed films, occultism, and buried secrets that whisper seductively to be unearthed.
There’s so much I’m digging about this book, my favorite I’ve read by Moreno-Garcia as yet. Despite its lurid subject matter (I use lurid as a compliment) it has a quiet confidence that allows the novel to unfold at a somewhat leisurely and hence satisfying pace, a refreshing change from so many of the grab-the-reader-by-the-throat narratives that are endemic to the horror and thriller spaces today.
Silver Nitrate is wholly character-driven with intense genre elements; in other words, it’s my favorite kind of story. More of this, please!
