Our dear friend Rick Lai passed away in his sleep last night.

Edited to add, and copied from Rick’s daughter’s texts to me:

Hi Mike, this is Allison Lai, Rick Lai’s daughter. I’m writing to share sad news that my dad passed away last night suddenly in his sleep. Our family is working on making funeral arrangements and I’ll be in touch when we have more information, likely with a wake on Friday and funeral on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers we ask that people consider making a donation to support Parkinson’s disease research and foundations.

Would you be able to also share this information with my dad’s other friends? Thank you for being such great friends to my dad all these years.

It’s a shock to us all. My mom had checked in on him at 2AM and he was his usual self, then he wasn’t responsive a few hours later. I’m glad to hear that he was able to be with you guys recently–I know that brought him so much joy.

The family will receive visitors Friday, May 3rd, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Broadway, Bethpage. Funeral Mass Saturday, May 4th, 10 am at St. Martin of Tours RC Church. Interment following at St. Charles Cemetery.

We will also be planning a lunch after the funeral and internment in the area, let us know if you know if anyone would be interested in joining us for that.

Mike here again. I honestly cannot think of anything to say right now except that I am gutted by this news, I am overwhelmed and devastated. I’ve been playing these two songs and I don’t know if they are helping, or making it worse.

    Hey Mike.
Sympathies to you and his closest compadres.

I had read Rick’s scholarship before I ever met him or the rest of The Ezine Crew at NecronomiCon. I gave a shout-out to him once across the vendors room that embarrassed him somewhat but

  2. I only met Rick a couple times, but I felt like I knew him through his participation on the podcast. Hard to imagine he’s gone.

  3. So very, very sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. Deepest condolences and sympathies to Rick’s family and his many friends. It is wonderful that so many of the members of the podcast were present for Rick’s last show and that he was surrounded by the presence of friends. Rick will be sorely missed.

  4. Because of my age it seems that I have entered a season in which the leaves are blown away from the limbs of the trees all around me in the forest I live in. When you travel on the same road long enough with someone they seem to belong with you “in the same graduating class”, so to speak. This makes for a sadder sadness, but it also pushes you closer to the Friends you have. Take care.

  5. So very sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. I only knew Rick from listening to the podcast over the years but I admired his encyclopedic knowledge of the pulp and weird fiction genres. I know many of us now feel like a trusted, important volume in our library has suddenly gone missing. Thanks Rick for sharing your knowledge with us for so long. God bless you and your family.
