We Are Lovecraftians.

I’ve been collecting Lovecraftian books for a long time — short stories and novels not just by HPL himself, but also many other books of stories that share the tone and themes of Lovecraft.  At the beginning of 2011, I had a thought: What if there was an online magazine that offered these kinds of stories to read for free?  Quality Lovecraftian stories just like in those books?  Wouldn’t that be great?

At that point, I was hooked on the idea, and had no choice but to create The Lovecraft eZine.

Nine months later, we have just passed the 300 mark on email subscriptions.  We are at just under 600 Facebook fans.  And The Lovecraft eZine gets hundreds and hundreds of unique visits every day.  As I write this, the total number of unique visitors to the website is 59,861.

And the leading Lovecraftian scholar in the world, S.T. Joshi, has said (on video, no less!) that he is very impressed with The Lovecraft eZine!

Those numbers mean that an awful lot of people are hooked on this idea, too.  You’re on board this train with me.  You’re a Lovecraftian.

Lovecraftians are special people.  We don’t just love horror — we love Lovecraftian horror.  Something about it speaks to us… something about the themes of deep time, cosmic horror, the ancient, and the unknown and unknowable.  It’s hard to pin down — hard to define.  But we get it.

You get it.  That’s why you’re here.

I just wanted to say “thanks” to all of you for being here.  I won’t let you down — The Lovecraft eZine will be around as long as I’m around.  I will continue to publish only the best Lovecraftian stories for you.  This isn’t just my magazine — it belongs to all of us.

So… thanks for telling your friends about the magazine.  Thanks for sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon.  Thanks for donating to the cause.  Thanks to the new team that’s helping me with the load.  And a big “thank you” to the writers for bringing us such awesome stories.

Most of all, thanks for being here.  For being a fellow Lovecraftian.
Mike Davis

  1. Thank YOU, Mike, for providing a venue. In a world that claims many meanings, it’s nice to come back to a safe place, where monsters from beyond will strip your soul for their own arcane purposes. A nice, safe place, where horrible things happen for no reason, and the world works the way I understand it.

  2. It is safe to say that being a Lovecraftian is one of the very important aspects of my life. As a creative artist it IS my life. I am now able to life that life full-time, which amazes me every day. I knew from the first that Lovecraft was special, but I had no idea of how captivating he and his world could be until I read those first three volumes of the SELECTED LETTERS and HPL’s spell took firm hold, affecting the way I thought, spell’d certain words, dated my letters, sought correspondents, &c &c. For those who are new to Lovecraft and his realm–you can have a lifelong relationship with this eldritch fellow. The more books I write of Lovecraftian weird fiction, the more I want to write. Intoxication.

I’m taking this month off to read and repair, so I won’t have anything in the October Lovecraft eZine. Makes me sad, that being my favourite month — but I need to take a wee break. I love this online publication and its creator, and I am so thankful for the creative outlet he has given me.

    best wishes, my darlings.

  3. So..been collecting Loveccraftiana a long time have you? I have a pretty good library, mostly listed on Librarything. I am happy collecting comics in their compiled graphic novel form, or as reprints but some books have been beyond my reach. Here is my current missing mythos list. Some are too rare and others too expensive as used copies. I sort of gave up keeping up with Rainfall Books’ chapbooks, as they became too hard to find after they stopped seliing them on ebay, and Shocklines closed down.

Exorcisms & Ecstasies by Karl Edward Wagner, from Fedogan and Bremer. A used copy is selling for ~ $400 on Amazon.

The Dark Homage series from Delerium Books: The Man Who Killed Kew
Gardens – The Seventh Victim – An Outsider – The God of Foulness –
The Arms of the Sun – Epiphany: A Flying Tiger’s Story. I have some in their reprinted form but I would love the original series from Delerium. One set came up for auction at Horror Mall at $400 and sold before I even knew it was there.

The original Forever Azathoth by Peter Cannon from Tartarus Press. Used copies run $200.

The Winds of Zarr – Richard Tierney. Unavilable for sale anywhere that I can see.

Ex Libris Miskatonici – Joan Stanley. A paperback used copy is for sale for almsot $100.

The Fear Institute: Johannes Cabal – Jonathan Howard. I know I’ll get this eventually, it just needs a US printing to be reasonably priced.

The limited edition of The Haunter of the Threshold – Edward lee. This listed at $1250 and was bound in snakeskin. I desperately wanted it but could not afford it. Now a cheap paperback is available from Deadite Press, that I have. I cannot stomach the book howver, which opens with a scene of degrading rape porn.

Black Forbidden Things – Robert Price. An old compilation from Crypt of Cthulhu. A used copy lists at $600!

The Horror of It All – Robert Price. This one is a relative bargain at $250.

That’s about it for what I’m missing! Any that got away from you?

  4. What you’ve started and continue to do is fantastic and adds another dimension to the multifaceted anthropomorphic otherworldly beast that so many of us have come to love and enjoy. For some it’s entertainment, for others it’s life-blood. Keep up the good works and we’ll continue to worship at the alter of Grandpa’. IA! IA!
