Edited to add: Wow! Andrew “The Weirdling” Glos has pledged to match, dollar for dollar, any Patreon signup from the time I posted this last night through the end of the month. In other words, if you become a Patreon at the $10 level, he will donate another $10 to the podcast.

Mike Davis

A few months ago I looked something up on Wikipedia, as I often do. As I did, I noticed a request to support Wikipedia financially. I thought about that and I realized two things:

(1) I’ve used Wikipedia a lot. If it went away, I would miss it. No question.

(2) They were only asking for 3 or 4 dollars a month.

I took the plunge and I now support Wikipedia every month. I just couldn’t, in good conscience, refuse to send them a few bucks a month, when they have given me so much more.

My point is: I receive so many kind emails from people who love the podcast, people who look forward to each episode. And I really appreciate the kind words. But if you do enjoy it, I hope you’ll come to the same conclusion about the eZine Podcast that I did about Wikipedia. Please join the Lovecraft eZine Patreon, because the eZine will not survive if you don’t.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that if I can’t increase my income somewhat, I will need to stop doing the podcast, and find employment somewhere. I have a very limited amount of energy due to my chronic illness, and I just can’t do the podcast and a job at the same time.

My bottom Patreon tier is $5 a month. I know that there are folks who cannot even afford that much. But most of us can. And I’m saying point-blank that if I can’t pay my bills with the Patreon (and my wife’s salary), I’ll have to close the eZine doors.

I’m not a person who cares much about money. Honestly, if I can pay my bills, and I have a little left over to buy a book to read, I’m happy. That truly is all I’m trying to accomplish with this post.

And if you’re a writer or creative and I’ve supported your work, and I’ve put the word out about your books, I’ve posted about you, etc., then I hope you will consider making that support go both ways. I’ll never refuse to support someone if they are not a Patreon, but I’m just asking you to understand that I need support as well.

To those of you who are Patreons already: Thank you. There’s only one reason why the eZine Podcast and community continues. It’s because of you.

Thank You,
Mike

Quotes from current Patreons:

David Cohen:

Both in terms of content and community, the Lovecraft eZine is an invaluable resource. It’s easily the best “bang for the buck” of what I support on Patreon and anyone who enjoys and produces weird fiction would absolutely benefit from joining it.

Bill Bleuel:

Aside from it’s amicability and German Godzilla, it’s the exposure: The King in Yellow; Ghostwatch; Lake Mungo–just a sampling of great things I’d never heard of before.

Stephen Mark Rainey:

Lovecraft eZine is what I’d call a damned fine interactive environment, a gathering place for some of the best writers, artists, and generally creative folks I’ve ever been associated with. Proprietor Mike Davis knows how to communicate, engage, and promote like nobody I know. Thanks, Mike.

Alan Baker:

I love the Lovecraft eZine, and I’m very happy to be a Patron. It’s great to watch these fine people chatting about all things weird and fantastic, and it’s a wonderful community. Others have noted that it’s like hanging out with a bunch of good friends, and I fully concur. Great people, great conversations, and great perks for Patrons.

George Hopper:

The Lovecraft eZine Patreon brings another level to the great content that is offered for free! There are hangouts with the most welcoming and knowledgeable horror fans I’ve ever met, deep dives with exciting genre authors, recommendations, even free books. If you’re a fan of horror/weird fiction I urge you to come hang with us deep in the dark under the sea.

  1. Mike I do enjoy your website, but at 71 years old and dealing with lymph node cancer I am struggling myself. If I had it I would help out but unless I can get control of this cancer and go back to work my life is kind of f…ked.

    • Paul, I am SO sorry to hear about your cancer. That must be such a struggle.

Please enjoy the website and the podcasts. Not everyone can chip in, I totally understand that. I’m just sorry you are going through this.
